Sustainability is always at the forefront of my mind when creating books for Pasgadh Bindery.

The materials chosen to make each book are either secondhand, recycled, or, if new, purchased from small British businesses.

Being so heavily influenced by Scotland’s beautiful natural landscape, it’s only right that Pasgadh Bindery is as kind to the planet as can be.

Handmade notebooks made from sustainable materials.

Learn more about the materials that go into making Pasgadh books:

Papers

The papers that make up the book blocks for each book are all recycled.

The papers in Pasgadh notebooks are 100% recycled from post-consumer waste purchased from a family business that specialises in eco-friendly products. You likely see flecks and fibres in the paper, which, although not obvious unless you’re looking closely, is a lovely reminder that these papers are getting another use.

In Pasgadh sketchbooks, the mixed media cartridge paper is made from single-use coffee cups, preventing them from ending up in landfill and instead creating a versatile paper that is suitable for both wet and dry media. This paper is also acid and chlorine free.

Handmade Paper

The handmade papers that feature on the covers of Pasgadh books are sourced from a small British business that specialises in a wide range of handmade papers.

Maps

The maps are second-hand purchases that are found in charity and antique shops. There is great joy in discovering the perfect map on the shelves in the shop; it's a bit of a lucky dip as to what you will find.

Tartan

The tartan added to the cover of some books is purchased as off-cuts from small businesses. This means you’re never sure what kind of tartan you will get in your bundle, but there is always a range of wonderful colours.

Book Cloth

I make my own book cloth using fabric off-cuts, backed with an iron-on adhesive and recycled tissue paper, which prevents the glue from seeping through to the fabric. Using off-cuts means that patterns are limited, ensuring that there is a greater variety to the books created. So, if you see a book with a fabric pattern that you like, be sure to snap it up while you can!

Greyboard

The greyboard, which forms the hardback cover of each book, is created from 100% recycled material. They are also 100% acid-free.

Additional Materials

The other little materials that makeup Pasgadh books, such as the thread for binding the book blocks, the headbands, and the elastic ribbon are all purchased as much as possible from small British businesses.
